UNBOXING | Fairyloot: Unlikely Romances - May 2019

It's always great when you love every item in a book box, even if you're not that invested in every book or series that the items are inspired by, and that is exactly what happened for me with FairyLoot's May Unlikely Romances box! I knew I had to get this box because I am such a hopeless romantic and I adored the theme right away, and I am so glad I did, because there are some wonderful items that are from books I really love, and even the items that are inspired by books I haven't read yet are really beautiful and useful! As well as that the book that came in the box sounds so intriguing and I am very excited to read it. It also has pink sprayed edges and I utterly love anything that is soft pastel pink. I've listed each item that came in the box below, along with a link to the designer or shop that created it.

Tahereh Mafi Ignite Me bamboo travel mug, designed by KDP Letters.

Cassandra Clare Shadowhunter sticker, designed by obsidiayan.

Nadine Brandes Romanov promotional card.

Theme card, bookmark and leaflet.

Character art card by Rachel Hanke with author letter on the back.

Signed edition of The Beholder by Anna Bright with pink sprayed edges.

Overall I was completely delighted with this box, and am very happy I purchased it! I think my favourite items are the key chain inspired by The Cruel Prince (it's so pretty) and the Starfall candle (I just adore scented candles, I think it's gradually becoming an addiction). As mentioned at the beginning of this post, I am also in love with the special edition of The Beholder because the pink edges just make me really happy.

BOOKS ¦ Review: A Curse So Dark And Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

Name: A Curse So Dark And Lonely
Author: Brigid Kemmerer
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Date published: 2019
Rating: 4/5

Fall in love, break the curse.
It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.
Nothing has ever been easy for Harper Lacy. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s instead somehow sucked into Rhen’s cursed world.
Break the curse, save the kingdom.
A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.
- From Goodreads.

A Curse So Dark And Lonely was a really fantastic retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It managed to use the basic foundations of the fairy tale to create a unique story of its own where the characters felt new and the plot felt unpredictable. I was always eager to find out what happened next and to see more of the characters.
The world building was fascinating and it was interesting to see them venture beyond the isolated castle and interact with minor characters such as the subjects of the kingdom. It felt like a realistic world and I will be excited to learn and see more of it.
The slow build up of affection between Harper and Rhen felt believable and I was definitely rooting for their relationship and for the two of them to be together by the end. They were both likeable and understandable characters and I enjoyed both of their perspectives as I cared about them both. I also thought it was great to see the inclusion of a character with cerebral palsy, as I do not think it is something I have read before, and I think reading about how Harper lived with her condition helped me to learn more about a disability I was not so educated on, and I also think it added more depth and realism to the story. Grey was also a brilliant character who felt like an excellent addition to the story.
As well as that, the writing was also wonderful to read, it was very good at evoking emotion and there were also a lot of humorous moments that genuinely made me laugh out loud as I was reading.
The only part of the book that I did not love so much was the ending. It left me feeling slightly unsatisfied as I was hoping for something more wrapped up. I understand that there is a sequel, and there was somewhat happy ending that was certainly hopeful, but I felt like the characters had worked so hard for a completely happy ending and I felt let down when they did not definitely get one. However I did love the book overall and I will be looking forward to reading the next one.

BOOKS ¦ Review: The Orphanage of Gods by Helena Coggan

Name: The Orphanage of Gods
Author: Helena Coggan
Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Date published: 2019
Rating: 3.5/5

In the bloody revolution, gods were all but wiped out. Ever since, the children they left behind have been imprisoned in an orphanage, watched day and night by the ruthless Guard. Any who show signs of divine power vanish from their beds in the night, all knowledge of their existence denied.
No one has ever escaped the orphanage.
Until now.
Seventeen-year-old Hero is finally free - but at a terrible price. Her sister has been captured by the Guard and is being held in a prison in the northern sea. Hero desperately wants to get her back, and to escape the murderous Guardsmen hunting her down. But not all the gods are dead, and the ones waiting for Hero in the north have their own plans for her - ones that will change the world forever...
As she advances further and further into the unknown, Hero will need to decide: how far is she willing to go to do what needs to be done?
- From Goodreads.

The Orphanage of Gods was a very exciting book, with almost non-stop action, complex characters, and vivid descriptions that really immersed you in the story.
There was definitely more gore and violence than I expected and, while I think it helped show how vicious the world was and how desperate or cruel some of the characters were, I would have appreciated a little more warning because I do not think the book description prepared me for that.
While the action was well-written and kept my attention, I thought there could have been more pauses and breaks between action scenes as it felt like as soon as one fast-paced scene had ended, another one began and there was no time to breathe or think between those moments. I understand this was a good way to show that the characters were living in a dangerous world where they could not count on being safe, but unfortunately since the characters did not have any time to process the events and their thoughts, neither did I and I would have liked more time.
One of the positives of the book was the multiple perspectives as they were all from likeable characters' viewpoints that helped me to see how the world and the story could be seen through different lenses and why the characters might have different ideas or opinions. I did not feel like any of them were unnecessary.
The ending left me feeling conflicted. I could see why it ended the way it did, because it seemed realistic that it was as happy an ending as it could be given that they story was set in such a gruesome and gritty world. However I still felt a little unsatisfied with it, I do not think all of the character deaths were necessary, and I think the ending could have been just a little longer to give us more details of how the world looked after the climax of the story.
Overall, I did enjoy reading The Orphanage of Gods and felt invested in the story and the characters, but there were  quite a few places where I felt like it could have been better and could have left me feeling more satisfied.
